Our approach to Acupuncture
Not all Acupuncture is the same!
At Spring-Well Acupuncture, we pride ourselves on our commitment to the traditional practice of acupuncture. I trained both here in the UK and in China and qualified in 2000. Although I have a background in clinical research, my approach is deeply rooted in ancient Chinese healing traditions that have been refined and passed down through generations for thousands of years. I believe in the power of restoring balance and harmony within the body by stimulating specific acupuncture points. From a holistic perspective, each individual is viewed as unique, considering not only their symptoms but also their overall well-being and lifestyle to provide personalized treatments that promote natural healing.
Clients are often surprised that there are different forms of Acupuncture, and whilst on the surface they may appear to be similar, the differences in diagnosing conditions and how we choose which acupuncture points to use can dramatically impact outcomes.

What to expect
On your first visit, we will start by taking a brief history of your current health problems. Nothing invasive just questions such as duration, whether the onset was sudden or gradual. What things make your symptoms worse and what, if anything helps? We will also discuss your lifestyle habits such as sleeping patterns, exercise, and diet.
I then check your pulse, this is done on both wrists at three locations on each side at two different depths. Each pulse is related to a different organ and meridian (pathway). The shape and strength of each pulse tell me about your underlying state of balance which equates to your health. The pulse diagnosis is complemented by observation of your tongue. The shape, size, colour, and coating of your tongue give me more information about the deeper state of your health.
All of these observations along with several others build into a diagnostic pattern. This diagnosis really only makes sense to a practitioner, 'Damp heat in the lower San Jiao', 'Heart yin deficiency' or 'Ascendant liver yang' are just a few examples. From a practitioner's perspective, the most important factor is that the diagnosis contains within it, the treatment plan. This tells us which acupuncture points to use and how we treat them.
Acupuncture needling usually only takes a couple of minutes. You may be asked to lie down and I may need access to particular points. I will however discuss this with you to ensure that you are comfortable with the point locations. Over the years I have treated a large number of ladies, many with strict religious requirements, and I can usually find a way around most issues!
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it Hurt?
This is the most common question I'm asked. Whilst there is a sensation attached to needling, this is called 'de qi' or 'the grasping of the qi', this is not a painful sensation. Many clients become so relaxed that they actually fall asleep during their session.
How long are the needles left in?
The needles are typically left in place for about 30 minutes before being removed.
How many Sessions will I need?
This very much depends on the nature of the problem, how long you have had it, your age, and a host of other factors. Typically, most clients will see some improvement within a couple of days following the first session. The average number of sessions required to see significant improvement in most conditions is six, although some people will respond quicker, others do take longer.
How long is each session?
I book 45-minute sessions with a 15-minute gap/overrun. Allow an hour from walking in, to walking out. However the initial consultation may take longer.
